Overview of Partial Hospitalization
Partial Hospitalization, often referred to as a Partial Hospitalization Program or PHP, is a form of structured Outpatient treatment for individuals who need short-term but more intense treatment.
It is for individuals suffering from substance abuse and co-occurring mental health issues that are struggling to maintain recovery on their own. The goal of PHP is to stabilize their symptoms and return them to a lower level of care.
The duration of each PHP varies depending on the individual’s needs; it could last several weeks or even months. PHP typically requires each individual to partake in the program five days a week for several hours each day.

Benefits of Partial Hospitalization
- Comprehensive Treatment. One of the main benefits of PHP is that it includes a variety of highly effective treatment types, ranging from individual therapy to group therapy. Participating individuals will meet with licensed counselors and interact with other group members on a daily basis.
- Easier Transition. PHP is often a good fit for individuals coming out of Inpatient treatment because it allows them to receive intensive treatment while re-gaining a sense of independence. They must attend PHP for several hours each day but can go home at night.
- Affordable Alternative. Another benefit of PHP is the cost. Treatment is typically less expensive than that received at a full-time residential facility, whilst being just as effective in many cases. Some insurance providers, including Medicare, may cover all or a portion of the cost.
