Understanding Aftercare and Its Importance

July 29, 2022

The Purpose of Aftercare

Recovery from addiction can be a slow and long journey, filled with challenges.

According to a study conducted by JAMA, between 40% and 60% of individuals relapse within the first year following treatment.

On-going care, or aftercare, is important because it can help individuals prevent relapse and maintain a sober lifestyle.

It normally begins after an individual completes a higher level of addiction treatment, such as a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP).

Aftercare can involve independent activities or come in the form of a structured program offered at an addiction treatment center.

Developing an Aftercare Plan

An aftercare plan can help individuals manage their symptoms, develop coping mechanisms, and build self-esteem.

The best way to develop an aftercare plan is to seek out a structured aftercare program like those offered at an addiction treatment center. These centers can establish an individualized aftercare plan that addresses issues after treatment that can help clients achieve long-term sobriety.

Plans may include establishing a support system with friends, and family members, and support groups, as well as preparing the recovering addict for challenges outside of treatment. By adhering to the plan, a recovering addict is more likely to stay sober. Developing these plans will ensure that a patient has a high quality of life and avoids relapse.

Types of Aftercare Available

  • 12-Step Meetings: The most common aftercare activity is attending a 12-step meeting hosted by a support group such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Participation in these meetings is normally a required component of most structured aftercare programs. These meetings can help individuals feel like they belong to a community and can help them develop trust and empathy, which are vital for recovery.
  • Sober Living Homes: Another type of aftercare activity involves moving into a sober living home, also known as a halfway house. This can be a great option for individuals leaving an inpatient rehabilitation center who are not yet ready to return home. Sober living homes offer alcohol and drug-free living environments.
  • Therapy: Aftercare can also include individual and group therapy. Individual therapy takes place in a private, one-on-one setting where the sole focus remains on the individual. Group therapy, sometimes referred to as group conseling, helps reinforce the fact that individuals are not alone in their struggles and gives them the chance to offer and give support. Both can be standard components in a structured aftercare program.

Other aftercare activities can include finding a sponsor or participating in an alumni program. In addition, some aftercare programs may involve a case manager, who can help people with addiction find employment.

There is no perfect set of activities to ensure a successful recovery. To get the best results, individuals should work closely with a licensed counselor and develop an individualized aftercare plan. This will increase the chance of sustained sobriety and decrease the risk of relapse.
